City of Sanford talks budget cuts: downtown police, fire personnel

Angier police, city officials, Harnett County officials, Bobbitt Construction and private citizens attended the Aug. 22 ground-breaking celebration for the new police station.
The 1950-era police station at McIver and South Broad Street East had dealt with a series of problems, including mold from flooding and electrical issues, which were remediated.
The Angier Police Department outgrew its cinderblock station. The cramped layout, aging infrastructure and lack of modern security and technology prompted plans for a new station in the same vicinity.
Advised by Davenport Financial, the town dropped USDA funding in July due to complex paperwork and long waits, despite its lower interest rates compared to bank loans.
Residents will fund the construction via taxes deposited into the general fund and paid to a bank on a 20-year loan.
Construction begins Sept. 2 on the one-acre tract at 55 N. Broad Street W.
Architect Davis Kane and Bobbit Construction said they enjoyed several opportunities to serve in Harnett County.
“It’s the biggest thing to happen here,” Commissioner Steve Crisp said about the new police station.

Police officers exchanged shoulder pats and hugs. The congenial crowd’s happiness reflected a small town’s content with jobs well done: limiting crime by running The Bloods out of town, with heavy patrols and constant dedication to safety and in return citizens’ reciprocation with a safe, modern police station.
Construction is expected to take a year, though an officer jokingly shouted he’d give Bobbitt eight months.
