News Story Requirements:
200 words.
In some instances, 250 words will be accepted.
In all forms of journalism, even citizen journalism, stories must be verified.
Send verification, such as a witness account, photo, or statement from an official to verify statements that would be questioned.
For example, if you send a story claiming your child mowed fifty yards over the summer and earned $400, send the names of a few clients and their contact information for verification.
If you send a story claiming the nurse at the hospital provided exceptional service, share examples and a photo and the nurse’s contact information.
If you send a story about your town not fighting hard enough to stop a new business from moving in and demolishing possible homesites, include a quote from the town official and the official’s contact information.
State the facts and limit descriptive words. Submit your best work.
Do not send attachments.
Type into the body of the email.
Send photos in the body of the email.
Include: 1. your county, 2. full legal name, 3. address, 4. phone number, and if you are a minor, have a parent or guardian send their permission with their information. Full name will be listed as author of story.
All accepted submissions will be contacted by the editor for verification either by email or phone.

Restrictions for all submissions:
NO attachments will be opened.
No profanity.
Do not submit anything with discussions focusing on crime, sex, or gender.
No accusatory submissions. For example, do not send a story about an alleged crime from either the perspective of the alleged perpetrator or as a victim.
No plagiarism.
No AI-generated content.
No links to websites or social media addresses or emails, except with the advertising submission.
No repeats of free advertising within any three month period. For example, your news story is published with an advertising for Al’s Catering in July. In October, you may submit a new story for free advertising. However, if you want to submit another story without leading to the advertising topic, please do. Understand that when people see your name at least three times, they are more likely to remember it and associate it with the advertisement when they see it again.
Restrictions on submissions accompanying free advertising allow more people to benefit.
By submitting your story or art or book review and advertising statement, you agree and understand your words will be verified and edited and may be rejected. Rejections may be due to time efficiency, irrelevant date (too late to advertise event because editor is overloaded and cannot publish until a few days later), or do not align with editorial priorities.
No personal information will be shared or sold.
Sandhills News will edit your submission, but should you enjoy writing news and book reviews for publication here and want to submit several, consider learning the standard AP style. Here is a link to the AP Style Guide for writing a news story or book review for Sandhills News.
