UPDATED TWICE: Charles Taylor calls for Lee County GOP Chairman Jim Womack to step down

Charles Taylor serves on the Sanford City Council and has an active campaign for North Carolina House District 51.

Sandhills News reached out to the Lee County GOP for a statement earlier today and Jim Womack called this evening.

UPDATE: At 5:35 on Feb. 6, Jim Womack phoned to say that Charles Taylor’s letter was “…an act of desperation seeking to cloud the campaign issues and was whining about political support he is or isn’t getting from the county party instead of facing issues.”

“I can help my wife any way I want. I think it’s comical that Mr. Taylor would think I would  not support my wife,” Womack said.

“He is getting every bit of support the party would offer a candidate in a primary, even more so. For example, he littered the front of headquarters with four times the number of signs as any other candidate has and dropped two on the ground without a request for help from the party.”

Jim put one in the window and one in the headquarters lobby for anyone who may have  wanted it.

“Then he went on social media and said headquarters did not support him. Frankly, he’s whining about things that have no bearing on the race. And I think it’s destroying his candidacy and credibility as a candidate.

Mr. Taylor has not been active in the Republican Party for over ten years. And now he wants the support of the Republican Party in a partisan primary. That probably isn’t going to sit well with the many volunteers who support Republican candidates for public office.

If Mr. Tayor wants to generate Republican support, he should consider becoming active with the Republican Party. He’s a member of the county executive committee that runs the county party but has not attended a single meeting in ten years, but has been invited to every meeting. He’s only physically been in the headquarters two times in ten years.”

His wife, Sherry Womack, who is running against Taylor for District 51, is focused on the issues facing Lee and Moore County voters, and she does not wish to comment on the Republican issues with Charles Taylor.

UPDATE #2: Response to the Complaint of Mr. Charles Taylor by Max Dolan, Chairman of the Lee County Republican Party.

​”In a complaint dated February 5, 2026, Charles Taylor is seeking intervention from the NCGOP State Party Chairman, Jason Simmons. The State Chairman has the authority to intervene in local party affairs only when there is an inconsistency with state party rules—which is not the case here. Mr. Taylor’s grievance is factually false, whether by error or prevarication.

​ In his complaint, Mr. Taylor targets the Lee County Republican Party and former Chairman James K. Womack.  Notwithstanding a finding by the state party on the semantics of taking a “leave of absence”, Mr. Taylor is complaining that Mr. Womack used Party resources not in common use or available to him to help Mr. Womack’s wife,  retired army lieutenant colonel Sherry-Lynn Womack. This protest is completely without merit; it misrepresents the ongoing operations of the local party and its relationship with the Conservative Coalition of North Carolina (CCNC), a Political Action Committee that shares a building with the Lee County NC GOP.

​Max Dolan is the current Chairman of the Lee County NC Republican Party. In compliance with established NCGOP practice, Jim Womack took a formal leave of absence as Chairman, which was unanimously approved by the Lee GOP Executive Board at its meeting on December 22, 2025. This allowed Mr. Womack to support his wife’s campaign.

Furthermore, in adherence to the rules of the Republican Party in both letter and spirit, Mr. Womack submitted a formal letter of resignation as Chairman to the NCGOP, effective January 6, 2026.

​ Jim Womack has worked tirelessly for Conservative causes in Lee County and across North Carolina, serving as a national leader in the fight for election integrity. His years of work as Chairman went far beyond missives of personal animus to create a practical impact on electoral change. “This We’ll Defend” is the motto of the U.S. Army; as a graduate of the United States Military Academy, former Chairman Womack has lived that motto by defending the causes of liberty in Lee County.

​ In contrast, Mr. Taylor has been absent from the Lee County Republican Party for several years. Had he participated in party affairs—as all other elected Republicans in Lee County do—he would have a better understanding of our Plan of Organization and our rules for supporting candidates.

​ Over the past three years, the CCNC has sponsored major Conservative events in Lee County , bringing travelers and business into the county for conferences and training. The Republican Party of Lee County NC, CCNC, a house of prayer, barber shop, law firm, the North Carolina Election Integrity Team (NCEIT), and a popular Latin Zumba class are all joint occupants of the office building at 101 S. Steele St. in Sanford.

​This address, 101 S. Steele St. is the elections headquarters for every Republican voter in Lee County. The door remains open for Mr. Taylor to come and join us.”
