Harnett: Filing for Municipal Office Elections begins July 7, 2025

Candidate filing for the 2025 municipal elections begins at 8 a.m. on July 7 and ends at noon on July 18. There are 15 open seats.

To qualify, candidates must be registered voters in Harnett County, live within the corporate limits of the municipality, and, where applicable, within the specific ward or district. Candidates must be at least 21 years old on election day.

To file, bring a valid North Carolina driver’s license or other photo ID and a method of payment for the filing fee. Fees up to $50 may be paid by cash (exact change only), check, cashier’s check, certified check or money order. Fees over $50 must be paid by check, cashier’s check, certified check or money order made payable to the Harnett County Board of Elections.

When you arrive, staff will verify your eligibility, assist with completing and notarizing filing paperwork, and collect the filing fee. Be prepared for possible wait times, especially on the first and last days of filing. Campaign finance questions can be addressed after filing.

Candidates planning to raise or spend over $1,000 must submit a campaign finance disclosure report within 10 days of organizing a committee. Treasurers of new committees must complete state-mandated training within 90 days of appointment and every four years thereafter. All candidates are encouraged to use the free campaign finance software provided by the N.C. State Board of Elections. Questions can be directed to harnettboe@harnett.org.
