Sanford to review 5 project proposals in April
April 6, 2026

The Harnett County Board of Education approved $2,068,424.70 in replacements and upgrades using remaining bond funds at the Nov. 17 work session.
Harnett Central High School’s replacement of broken bleachers with new telescoping bleachers by MasterCraft Renovation Systems, LLC costs $162, 683.
The bleachers at Western Harnett Middle School will be replaced by the same company, at the same cost.
Assistant Superintended for Auxiliary Services Chris Pearson said bleachers had passed their safe life limits.
The district will pay Cardinal Courts & Tracks, Inc $197,912.55 for the track resurfacing project at Triton High School.
Harnett Central High School’s track resurfacing by the same company costs $148,307.35.
Western Harnett High School’s track resurfacing costs $139,463.80.
Pearson said they were at the 13-year mark for the recommended 15-year suggested resurfacing.
Musco Sports Lighting will replace old light systems with LED sports field lighting at all high schools for a total of $1,257,375.
The board approved the $360,000 design consultant agreement with SfL+a Architects, PA for the 15,500 square foot nutrition cooler and freezer building on the existing 11.2 acre site of the HCS Maintenance Building at 1500 S Main Street in Lillington. The $3,370,000 project’s completion date is May 2027.
Sandhills News emailed the clerk to the board to find out which account funded the design and construction costs and had not received a reply at the time of publication.
The board clerk replied later in the day that it was funded through School Nutrition funds and local appropriations.
During presentations, a Harnett County Sheriff’s Office detective, Ronald Beasley, shared a Gang Resistance and Education Program. He said the need for the program originated from an increase in gang-related crime.

“You’re not going to arrest your way out of a gang problem. You need prevention,” Beasley said about the sheriff’s office’s motto and said he did not know when they could begin the program.

Member Don Godfrey asked if stricter laws would prevent youth from joining gangs.
Beasley answered that laws were in place and did not stop them. He said they had to remove older recruiting gang leaders from the community.
