Heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force: First Lieutenant Crummie distinguished himself by heroic actions on 4 April 1967, while serving as a platoon leader with Company C, 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry in the Republic of Vietnam. Lieutenant Crummie’s platoon was on a search and destroy operation when they came under heavy enemy small arms and mortar fire from well fortified and concealed Viet Cong positions. Lieutenant Crummie directed his platoon to return fire on the enemy positions and called in supporting artillery fire. While directing his platoon an enemy mortar round exploded near his position and fragments struck him in the chest. Realizing that his men might panic if they knew he was wounded, Lieutenant Crummie concealed his wound and continued to direct his platoon. It was not until the enemy force was defeated and the welfare of his men known that Lieutenant Crummie revealed his wounds. Lieutenant Crummie’s selfless actions contributed immeasurably to the defeat of the enemy force. Lieutenant Crummie’s personal bravery and devotion to duty are in keeping with ethe highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the Untied States Army.
The Harnett County Commissioners honored First Lieutenant Crummie at the Dec. 9 meeting.
