Harnett County’s grant means free smoke alarms

The Harnett County Fire Marshal’s Office is pleased to announce the receipt of Smoke Alarm Saturday Grants from the North Carolina Office of the State Fire (OSFM). 

In addition to the county office, the following local fire departments also received smoke alarms through this program: 

• Flat Branch Volunteer Fire Department 
• Northwest Harnett Fire Department 

These grants will support the 2026 Smoke Alarm Canvassing and Smoke Alarm Saturday Campaign, which runs from Friday, June 5 through Friday, June 12. The campaign focuses on identifying and equipping homes that lack working smoke alarms, particularly in sleeping areas. 

Smoke Alarm Saturday is a statewide event that unites fire departments across North Carolina in raising awareness about the life-saving importance of working smoke alarms. 

“Our goal is to reduce fire-related injuries and fatalities by ensuring every home has properly installed and functioning smoke alarms,” said Harnett County Fire Marshal Rodney Daniels. “Home fires can occur at any time, and too many fire deaths happen because smoke alarms are missing, disabled, or not working properly. Early detection provides occupants with critical time to escape. Through this campaign, we can reach more households, educate residents about fire safety, and help ensure families have the protection they need.” 

Free Smoke Alarms and Installation Available 

Harnett County residents without working smoke alarms in sleeping areas are encouraged to request a free smoke alarm by filling out the request form. 

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), between 2018 and 2022: 

• 59% of home fire deaths were caused by fires in properties with no working smoke alarms 
• 43% of these home fire deaths occurred in homes without smoke alarms. 
• 16% occurred in homes where smoke alarms were present but not operational. 

The Harnett County Fire Marshal’s Office remains committed to protecting lives and property through fire prevention, education, and enforcement. Through strong partnerships with local fire departments, the office strives to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.
