Brett Rusek has been named the Director, Greenkeeper Apprenticeship Program (GAP) at Sandhills Community College. He brings high-level industry experience into the classroom that is key to preparing the next generation of turfgrass professionals.
Throughout his career in the golf course industry, Rusek has worked at prestigious, high-profile clubs, including Pinehurst Resort, The Cliffs Communities, and Forest Creek Golf Club. These diverse experiences gave him firsthand insight into the technical expertise, work ethic, and leadership required to succeed in the field.
“My goal as Director is to bring those real-world experiences into the classroom and provide our students with practical knowledge that they can immediately apply at their own golf courses,” Rusek said.
The GAP program operates through a long-standing partnership between the United States Golf Association (USGA), the SCC Landscape Gardening Program, and Sandhills Community College. Designed as a bridge between classroom education and professional practice, the program connects students directly with golf course superintendents, industry mentors, and professional organizations to expose them to emerging technologies and career opportunities.
“Ultimately, our goal is to develop knowledgeable, dependable, and well-rounded individuals who are prepared to take the next step in their careers and make a positive impact on the golf course industry,” he said.
Rusek takes pride in preparing students for the real responsibilities of becoming future assistant superintendents, head superintendents, and industry leaders. By instilling communication skills, confidence, and strong technical foundations, he continues to make a lasting impact on students as they advance their careers in turfgrass management.
