Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society inducts new CCCC members

Phi Theta Kappa inductees took an oath to uphold the standards of the honor society and offer allegiance and support to fellow members.

Central Carolina Community College (CCCC) celebrated the induction of new members into its chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) during an evening ceremony on April 8.

Phi Theta Kappa recognizes students’ academic achievements and provides opportunities for them to grow as scholars and leaders. It is the premier international honor society for students pursuing two-year college degrees.

The April 8 event celebrated the chapter’s 100 inductees for 2026 and honored CCCC President Dr. Lisa M. Chapman and Vice President/Chief Academic Officer Dr. Kristi Short, who were recipients this year of PTK International Honor Society’s Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction and its Distinguished College Administrator Award, respectively.

In her remarks at the induction, Dr. Chapman said community colleges have the most unique and diverse student population among higher education institutions and that diversity is a key strength. It is a population that ranges from younger students completing a high school diploma while they work on a college degree to older students juggling other demands. PTK students, Dr. Chapman said, provide an example in how they successfully prioritize their college education while managing competing demands.

PTK officers, from left to right, are President Amya Richardson, Vice President Addison Tunnard, Public Relations Secretary Madison Reimer, Treasurer Dominique Small, and Recording Officer Isaac Barstow.

“The thing that I want you to remember is that you have accomplished something very, very special and that sets the stage for everything else you want,” she told them.

The guest speaker for the event was Cheryl Reynolds, Senior Accountant with Redox Incorporated, who is also a CCCC alumna and a founding leader of the chapter.

“Looking out at all of you today, it is incredibly rewarding to see how that foundation has grown,” she said.

In her address, Reynolds touched on each of Phi Theta Kappa’s four guiding principles: scholarship, leadership, service, and fellowship.

Scholarship, she said, is not just academic achievement, but also courtesy and a willingness to ask questions when the answers are not easy. Leadership, she said, does not require a position of authority, but instead begins with responsibility and integrity. Service does not always mean grand gestures, but can be found in small, consistent acts of kindness.

Fellowship, she said, was the most important thing she and her fellow founders built, as the chapter began.

“It reminds us to listen, to learn from one another, to celebrate differences while working toward shared goals,” she said. “The relationships you build through Phi Theta Kappa may begin here, but they can last a lifetime.”
