Lee County: boil water advisory for certain roads

A boil water advisory is in effect for the following roads in Sanford:

• Eakes Road
• Cedar Lane Road
• Hancock Road
• Blakely Road
• Old Jefferson Davis Highway
• Oakleaf Road

Water samples taken on August 8 were positive for total coliform bacteria. Coliforms are bacteria that are naturally present in the environment and are generally not harmful themselves. However, they are an indicator that other, potentially harmful, bacteria may be present. Subsequent testing for E. coli has been negative.

On August 8, all customers living on Oakleaf Road were notified of the boil water advisory. On August 10, further testing found coliform bacteria in the other roads listed above. At that time, the advisory was expanded to include those areas.

TriRiver Water is flushing the system and continuing to test for E. coli and total coliform bacteria.

Another round of samples will be taken Monday afternoon. Those results will be available Tuesday afternoon. If they are negative, the boil water advisory will be lifted.

In the meantime, all customers in the affected area are being asked to boil any water intended for human consumption vigorously for at least one minute.
