Charles Taylor, Republican nominee for North Carolina House in District 51, called on the online publication The Assembly to retract claims it made in its October 11, 2026 article, “State House Candidate Owns Undisclosed Property Being Used for Video Gambling.” In the hit piece, journalist Bryan Anderson asserted that Taylor failed to disclose investment properties he purchased on December 31, 2025 on the State Ethics Commission’s Statement of Economic Interest that all State House candidates must file.
The online form that Taylor completed required him to identify the city and county where his properties are located. Taylor completed the form by listing that he owned property in Sanford, North Carolina, which is located in Lee County. He fulfilled the disclosure requirements and completed the entire online form provided.
Further, Taylor’s general election opponent, April Montgomery, a Democrat-turned-Unaffiliated candidate, completed her disclosure forms in exactly the same fashion. Like Taylor, Montgomery owns multiple properties in Lee County.
“Bryan Anderson at The Assembly wrote a hit piece about me without all the facts,” Taylor said. “According to a written statement to me from the Director of the State Ethics Commission, I am not required to list the addresses of all my real estate investments. I complied fully with the disclosure.”
“As a Sanford City Councilman, I have worked tirelessly for the betterment of my city. As a State Representative, I will serve the people of Lee and Moore counties with honesty and integrity. Taylor said that Bryan Anderson and The Assembly applying a different standard to him than to his opponent is disgraceful. “This journalist and this publication had an agenda, and they didn’t allow facts to get in the way of their libelous attack on me. How shameful!”
Taylor has retained the services of Raleigh Lawyer Phillip Thomas.
