Sanford recognized four emergency responders as Hometown Heroes who were nominated by the North Carolina Automobile Dealers Association.
John Hiester Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Sanford nominated two members of the Sanford Police Department, and two members of the Sanford Fire Department were honored during a ceremony held on Wednesday, Oct. 21.
Sanford Police Officers M. Hogan and P. Hanson were nominated for their response to a residential fire on Aug. 15. Hogan arrived on the scene before firefighters and learned an elderly occupant was still inside. Knowing that every second was crucial, Hogan immediately entered the home and found the occupant unconscious. Hanson arrived shortly after and ran into the home to help Hogan. Together, the officers were able to rescue the man and save his life.

Sanford Fire Captain Clay Vaughan was recognized for his response during a tragic motor vehicle accident on June 5. On a day off from Sanford, while working for Benhaven Emergency Services, Captain Vaughan was dispatched to the scene of the crash. Vaughan immediately triaged the multiple injured parties and jumped in to help less-experienced firefighters provide lifesaving care to a pediatric victim. He continued to provide care during transport to the hospital, including helping the child stay calm and feel safe.
Fire Battalion Chief Lonnie Kiker was honored for his legacy of selfless and dedicated service to the Sanford community. Kiker retired in July after 35 years with the Sanford Fire Department, where he instilled the values of hard work, firemanship, and community service in countless firefighters over the years.

The ceremony was held at the dealership’s Fuquay-Varina location and was attended by nominees from across the region, including Sergeant Wesley Holder from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. John Hiester presented the award to each recipient.
The exemplary dedication and rapid response shown by these first responders, in and out of duty, bring distinction to themselves, their departments, their professions, and the City of Sanford.
